Stunt “Apply the Lazarus Heart”
The Lazarus Heart is one of the few spells that works on a deceased target … and it is also one of the most controversial.
The Lazarus Heart remains on the target, invisible except to those trained in the Supernatural, who can perceive it as a glowing mark on the target’s breast, right where their heart is.
The Lazarus Heart is triggered when the target becomes Dying, Dead, or Overkilled. If you cast the Lazarus Heart on a target that’s already Dying, Dead, or Overkilled, the spell triggers immediately.
When activated, roll the target’s Will and your Mind and Academics. Keep the two sets of dice separate. Your opposed difficulty is d8 if the target is Dying, or d12 if the target is Dead or Overkilled.
If you score one success, replace the Dying status with Fatigued.
If the target is Dead, you must score one success for each hour (or part thereof) that the target has been dead. If you have enough successes, the target comes back to the world of the living – Sick, but alive.
If the target was Overkilled, the target may still survive, as above, but they are also horribly disfigured. This disfigurement may result in the forced re-training of one or more Gifts, at the discretion of the Game Host
If you Tie against the difficulty, nothing happens for this round. The Lazarus Heart will try again next round, on the target’s turn. (If the target is Dying, it may tragically happen that the target will become Dead before the Lazarus Heart tries again.)
If you Fail, consult the dice. If it’s your dice that rolled the lowest, then you (wherever you are) immediately become Afraid and Confused. If it’s the target’s dice that rolled lower, then the target becomes Afraid and Confused (if they’re still alive enough) … and there is a slight possibility that the target may rise as one of the Undead. Either way, the Lazarus Heart immediately expires.
This gift can only be refreshed by praying once at each office of the day – that’s eight prayers of 8 minutes each, 3 hours apart, over a total of 24 hours. Refreshing this Gift immediately removes any Lazarus Hearts that are still active.
