Declare a crowd of targets, and a task they must perform, or a practice that they must refrain from doing. Inform the crowd using an inspirational speech. Exhaust this Gift.
Roll your Mind & Will vs. the crowd’s Will. The lowest-rolling failure in the crowd is the one who actually has the penitence cast upon them – you will recognize this person on sight as the penitent.
The rest of the crowd won’t know if it’s on them or not … and it’s not common knowledge that this spell only works on one person, so this spell is very good at keeping a whole crowd in line.
If the penitent target breaks the promise you specify, the spell ends and you instantly know. If the promise has a duration (e.g. “Abstain from all alcohol for a year and a day”), the spell also expires when the duration is up.
The promise is broken when the target believes they broke the rule.
This gift can only be refreshed by praying for 8 minutes during the Office of Nones (3 pm to 6 pm). As soon as this gift is refreshed, the penitence expires.
