Description
The Komodo are taught to wrestle before they learn to stand; they are taught to stifle pain before they learn to speak. They must take their meals from the wilderness, for it is by cunning and by persistence that one can prevail. Even the recreational games of the Komodo can look grisly and violent to outsiders; but the Komodo do not feel pain as others do, and one does not know endurance unless one has the scars to prove it.
The Komodos prize their strong bodies, and make themselves art. They mark their rough-scaled hides with scars, pierce jewelry of scrimshaw and opal to their skin. To better gleam with strength, they paint themselves with fierce, bright-blazing colors before they go to raid or war; the styles and the colors will vary depending on which clan.
Outsiders rarely understand the Komodo - and that might be in large part due to the Komodo's unfathomably noxious breath. The rancid bite of the Komodo can become infected and cause a painful, slow death. To the Komodo, victory is through persistence - to fuss about whether the quarry is felled by a swift blow or by lingering toxins is to complain about how slowly the sun crosses the sky.
