Description
Even without their renowned quills, porcupines are a difficult bunch to know with any intimacy. Many are even mistaken as being mute or deaf, or under some monastic vow of silence. They are simply quiet souls; and not particularly contemplative ones either. Their silence might come across as meditative (elderly porcupines tend to radiate a wizened calm) but should you draw one into conversation you wouldn't learn anything you didn't already know.
Porcupines fill many "invisible" roles as household staff, clerks, and practitioners of mild handiwork. They are content to be the smallest cog in the machinations of others. What is notable is that this extreme passivity means they are often correctly thought of as merely "the help", and beneath the notice of those leading more complicated lives. Many intrigues and plots are hatched in full view of porcupines by people who would otherwise demand absolute secrecy. They also tend to be trusted with matters of discretion; all secrets are safe within a porcupine.
